REPORT: How should Porto raise its profile as a Tourist Destination

Over the last decade, Portugal has been showing an increasingly greater understanding of the contribution of tourism to national and regional economic development, along with the resultant increase in both rates of employment and movement of people into the countryside.

Tourism has been asserting itself as one of the more dynamic and promising sectors of the Portuguese economy. The direct contribution of Travel & Tourism to the Portuguese GDP in 2006 was EUR11.9bn – 6.4% of total GDP and the total contribution (direct + indirect) was EUR30.8bn – 16.6% of GDP, (WTTC, 2017).

In 2017, Porto was chosen by the public as the “European Best Destination” for the third consecutive time, thus taking the lead over destinations such as Paris, Milan or Madrid (EBD, 2017).

Diverting visitors from identified overcrowded attractions to other areas with touristic potential within the region will allow sustainable development of the tourism industry in Porto.
